If shrews chose prey that maximised their foraging efficiency in both cases, despite big differences in the nature and activity of the prey, it would again reinforce our confidence in the foraging efficiency hypothesis. Comparative studies may be experimental or observational so are not in any sense alternatives to the first two categories above. The key point is that existing ecological and putative evolutionary differences between species or populations provide a ready-made set of ‘treatments’ for comparison.
