1992). Here they serve as a spatial accounting unit for individual locality records. The sources (specimen record, expert opinion, literature citation, state reference book) used to predict the presence of a species in a hexagon are recorded in a data base by ONHP. Most species have been recorded in relatively few hexagons in Oregon. Museum specimen records contributed just over 3,000 primary sources used to attribute species to individual hexagons. ONHP asked experts on each class of vertebrate to provide their opinions about the probable presence of species in hexagons for which ONHP had no locality record.

The Oregon Actual Vegetation Map, prepared by Jimmy Kagan and Steve Caicco, was used in the development of the species distribution maps. Greg White, C & G White Cartography; Mike Wing, E&S Environmental Chemistry; and Chris Kiilsgaard, Cascade Geodata, assisted the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in developing distribution maps. Charley Barrett, Becky Frasier, Trevor Jones, Kevin Sahr, and Denis White, Oregon State University, also assisted in map compilation and production. Additional draft maps were prepared by Troy Merrill, Eva Strand, and Nancy Wright, University of Idaho.
